Community Energy Coordinator ended on 31 July 2024

CaDET’s Community Energy Coordinator is available to help residents (both owners and renters) to find reliable information about ways to make energy dollars go further. This includes:

  • making sense of energy bills
  • improving home energy efficiency
  • converting from gas to electrical appliances
  • finding government incentives
  • assessing solar PV panel and/or battery storage needs
  • being up to date on farming practices that fit with Australia’s commitment to carbon emission reduction.

The Cobargo Community Energy Coordinator initiative is funded through the Federal Government’s Black Summer grant scheme to provide free energy consultations and information sessions for Cobargo and district community members.

Tips for reducing your energy bill

Are you on the most cost-effective electricity plan? There are two things you can check:

  • First, there is a small information box, usually on page 1 of your electricity bill, which tells you there is another plan which will save you X dollars from the same energy retailer if you change plans.
  • Next, go on the https://www.energymadeeasy.gov.au/ government website where you enter your NMI (National Metering Identifier) number (find it on your electricity bill near Account Details). The website will return a list of energy retailers’ plans with the cheapest one listed first. Check the details – you may be pleasantly surprised at the alternative plans available!

The next step on the path to a more energy efficient home is to work through a checklist such as the Home Energy Action Guide A Household Energy Action Guide.

If you’re thinking about putting solar PV on your roof …

… and maybe adding a battery, here are two links to help you work out what you need:

  • https://www.energy.gov.au/solar This step-by-step guide, produced by the Australian Government, takes you through installing, using, and maintaining your solar system, and
  • https://www.sunspot.org.au/ is a complementary site. The “SunSPOT solar and battery calculator estimates your system size, the cost, and how much you will save”.
